I wouldn't be a potter without my parents. Here is my mom with her energetic little dog, Abby. My dad is a watercolor painter, and I think a special visit with him and his work should happen soon.

- Gary Rith is a full-time studio potter and also an instructor of pottery at Cornell University's Pot Shop. Gary started learning pottery in 1983. In 1985 he served as an apprentice to Dean White of Deansboro, NY and earned a bachelor's degree in art from Bennington College in 1987. He has been a full-time sculptor and potter since 1997. Gary started his business in New Hamspshire, where he was selected as a member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen in 2004 and in 2005 was named one of New Hampshire's Emerging Ceramics Artists. He moved to the Ithaca, NY area in 2006, near where he grew up, and is happily making pots and sculpture in a purple house on Fall Creek. Gary likes to laugh, and his first goal is to have fun making pots.

It's beautiful that you can see you wouldn't be a potter without your parents. There are so many parents in the world who would run for the hills if their child decided to make art for a living.

Well, I was pretty stubborn about it but it was what I wanted to do, although I didn't show any particular aptitude or talent early (that's my evaluation). My mom is a sweet and creative lady, my dad creative and VERY FOCUSED. As in, set a goal, like building a pyramid, and then taking the steps to make it happen. That's tough in life, charting the course that gets you to the goal, but that's where I got it.
