Stone Soup

One thing I like about Maggie's blog (I really need to get the links section back together on the right) is her menu. Now everybody knows what her son and little twins have to look forward to!
This potter loves to cook, and has the responsibility of keeping the house well fed. PETA (yes, that PETA)had a vegan stew recipe the other day in their magazine, which I have now made twice. The secret to stew in general, I find, is you can put anything in there and call it stew, and it will be delicious if: you simmer it all day, and you spice it very generously. In this case, veggies and veggie broth and fake meat and a potful of leftovers thickened slightly with mashed potatoes, simmered all day make a fantastic stew.

Thanks! I wasn't sure anyone had even noticed I put my menu up. You are so right. If its simmered all day and spiced right, you could stew up anything. And it will be delicious! Your stew looks lovely.

Thank you. I was subtly showcasing the bowls. Potatoes are grand, aren't they?

Some day, we'll have to discuss PETA's PR tactics, Gary.

The bowls and the stew look great, though ...

mm stew! I just took out some... ahem meat for making a stew tonight that will simmer all night ;) .. I think carrots, some celery, peppers and barley will go into this one.

love cooking too! hmm will have to see if I can find any period recipes you might like gary. They are delicious and often very subtle flavours that we just don't have anymore (in the good way)

I find many of PETA's campaign's tactics amusing Gordo. I am a reclusive type, though, and certainly MYOB where food is concerned, and most issues.

My view is this: hold whatever views you want, just don't try to cram them down my throat. PETA fails that simple test, so I try to ignore them.

You, I like to keep an eye on ... ;-)

You know, thi is generally a g-rated non-controversial blog but I wondered what might happen if I tossed out these bones. Folks are pretty polite, the banter friendly. Here are a couple of thoughts:
I can admire nature's most adaptable creatures, like ravens, pigs, rats and humans, because they cleverly survive by adjusting to where they are and what is available to eat, bugs, meat, berries, etc. We are at an interesting point in time, where we have a wide variety of food choices. If you are a lobster or trout or deer or boar wandering around, living the good life, and a person suddenly kills and eats you, that is one thing, and that is where people were up through our history. However, I am not sure modern factory farms and their misery are really all that good for anyone or the table.
Basically, I am not personally interested in meat or fish or fowl, and because of food allergies no more dairy for me either. My choices! I don't really care what other people are up to, as long as they are not Republican voters.

I'm laughing at your republican voters comment. That's hilarious. And I hadn't meant to slight your bowls because that was actually what caught my eye and I thought your post would be about, but then I read it and got all into thinking about stew. Well, me and food have a special relationship.

Watch out for me, mags, I poke fun at many things--of course the bowls/stew thing is a joke.
The republican jab is another...
