Oh oh: pottery student Virginia checks in

It will be remembered that our high school pal Virginia who is a most creative pottery student was making a little teapot with sculpted dogs playing poker, an excellent plan. BUT, pottery is a fragile medium at every stage, if it doesn't crack in the making, it might blow up in the kiln, and then it might fire perfectly but you drop it on your way home. Virginia tells us:

"so you remember my teapot i was doing for my final exam? it totally exploded in the kiln. a million little pieces would be an understatement. the spout and the handle survived. oh yeah, and the lid, which is now my project. it was so terrible to look in the kiln and see that... ug.

but the s'more mugs are doing well! none of them exploded. the marshmallow one just has fragments stuck to the glaze on the inside [yeah, it was that big of an explosion...].

NOT cool."

And I replied:

"Oh, I am so sorry to hear that. Yes, a million things can and do go wrong in pottery. Even if they don't go wrong, you can trip and fall on your way out the door and drop it....
My condolences.
GR"

":) thanks. much appreciated"

So, like Chumbawumba said, I get knocked down, I get up again....keep at it, Virginia.

I think celeste means if you are going to have an explosion, make it big

Susan as Herself said...

I used to get so mad when my stuff exploded in the kiln. Happened alot, until a ceremics major told me I was making items that were just to thick. Sigh.

celeste is right (but don't tell her I said that, I'll never live it down): if you're going to have an explosion, have a big 'un.
