which bottles? witch bottles!
(bottles by Gary Rith)
I was writing about witch bottles or Bellarmines the other day, and you KNOW I have to make some. The idea for these bottles started with putting the scowling image of Cardinal Bellarmine, a famous inquisitor of non-Catholics in the 1500s, onto bottles as something of a joke. These bottles were very common in Protestant Europe 300 some years ago, and people also used them a little like voodoo dolls, as repositories for an enemy's hair or something so you could try a spell.......
