my new friend and tenant!

(downy woodpecker in a little purple birdhouse)

We have 2 bird houses painted to match our purple house (cutesy cutesy, matchy matchy!) and a wren lived in the far one last spring and summer. This cute little downy woodpecker female moved into the one right by the house this week!!!!

Well, congratulations! Can't think of a much more charming tenant. I once had to keep watch over a bluebird nest in my newspaper delivery box. The kids boarded and descended from their school bus right there so curiosity was almost uncontrollable. A close watch and loud scary voice was maintained by me. Cancelled the newspaper for the duration and was 'on duty' each morning and afternoon.

Very cool, Gary. We're putting up bat houses come spring. :-D

Awwww. Sweet.

Last summer there was a nest of baby cardinals in the neighbor's hibiscus tree. The cardinal couple took turns guarding it, and I could heer them "chipping" every day. One morning I even peeked and saw four tiny hungry open beaks pointing straight up. :)
