Nazca!

I was reading in yesterday's NY Times about Chicago's F!eld Museum's new exhibit on ancient pre-Columbian pottery and peoples. The exciting part is the uses of pottery in human sacrifice and whatnot, for collecting blood of victims and that sort of thing. (well, I like the uses of people and animals in pottery)There were extraordinary pottery traditions in the Americas long before Europeans came over.

Well, I have heard of people using some of the ashes of cremated animals and people in the glazes for their urns. Creepy if you ask me.

Another example of one's sacrifice for the arts!

charred bones are used as pigments.
like in paints.
even today.

and that is just one example of ash used in materials.

and sometimes the sacrificees weren't victims.
